I am quite new at this.I have a google site. I understand from other forums that script can be installed in google spreadsheets.How on earth is that accomplished? Step by step please.Any help is greatly appreciated.

You require PHP, MySQL and a web server. If google spreadsheets supports such things you would use those but I highly doubt it does as those are components of a web server and not a spreadsheet.
