how to install a "Verification Code"

Hello, how can i install the "verification code" for the users sign up page?? a friend of mine, he is able to create a script to register 50 account per minute.. in order to prevent SPAM to happen, how can i make one?? i'm not really good in .php a step by step guide will be really helpful and appreciated!
